With My Teacher, Ilana Rubenfeld, in Ashland Oregon
As a Spiritual Relationship Healing Expert, Licensed Psychotherapist and Coach, I rarely talk about the beautiful and profound bodymind work I learned many years ago. This gentle, healing, empathic listening work has set the framework and the foundation for my counseling with clients and for the way I live my life.
Recently I spent a glorious week in a town that feels like days gone by – Ashland Oregon. This small town is surrounded by mountains looming in the distance, people dressed in simple clothing and Birkenstock type sandals with hairstyles reminiscent of Woodstock in the 1960’s. I traveled from the southeast to the northwest corner of the U.S. for a very special conference, the International Association of Rubenfeld Synergists, being held in the town where my teacher and mentor has been living for about 10 years.
Transported from the heart of Greenwich Village in New York City, Ilana Rubenfeld is as feisty as ever in her new, much more laid back environment. Back to her love for music, she has found a home in this idyllic town working with and supporting a group of dedicated and highly skilled young musicians.
At a time when women were not given opportunities in the music world, Ilana was a skilled orchestra conductor. But she developed pain in her back and shoulders which led to her life’s work and the creation of a whole new method of healing. Her favorite story is about her trips across town going from one session to another. First she would see her Alexander teacher who would guide her to let go of tension she was holding in her body. But then her emotions would rise and the teacher did not deal with that. So, she would traipse across town to see Fritz Perls, the originator of Gestalt Therapy, to express, explore and handle her emotions. She also studied with Moshe Feldenkrais who developed a method of awareness through movement exercises.
When people started asking Ilana to teach them how to do that “magic” that she did so well, she began a series of trainings in Gestalt Synergy which soon became known as The Rubenfeld Synergy Method. Using gentle, respectful, listening touch, allowing emotions to emerge and long held body tensions to dissipate, she taught so many of us how to be present and aware with another person. And her work led to the realization of a powerful set of principles which can be found in Ilana’s book The Listening Hand , in Healing Journeys: The Power of Rubenfeld Synergy (a series of chapters by certified practicing Synergists – my chapter is “Sexual Reawakening”), and my article and others at EzineArticles.com (Learn the Principles)(Relaxation Techniques)
I had the privilege of graduating from her 4th and largest training intensive that took place over several summers at Dowling College in Long Island. Now, after many, many years of training hundreds of students, Ilana has gradually let go of the helm as she watched her “baby” begin to develop in the arms of the next Training Directors, Joe Weldon and Noel Wight. At this point, the 17th Training has reached completion and the work continues to grow and expand.
What a world this would be if each of us could receive this type of listening touch and be fully present with each other through our life issues and transitions. Ilana’s elegant and magical work has been the foundation of my life’s work helping individuals and couples heal their bodies and their relationships through love. And in that room what I share with my clients is more than talking, more than empathy, more than gentle touch. We have a meeting of our souls, we meet each other at the contact boundary between life as we know it and that other realm.
What a treat it was for me and for my fellow synergists to enjoy delicious food and superb music in the home of our beloved teacher, Ilana, and to share in the experience of life as she lives it in Ashland Oregon. And, to top off an incredible week, I was in one of the best places in the world to view the solar eclipse that occurred on Sunday evening, May 20, 2012. The trajectory headed toward Medford, Oregon, the exact direction I was heading in a taxi to the airport with my friend and fellow Synergist, Judy Swallow, who happened to have a pair of special Eclipse glasses (which resembled 3-D glasses).
Ask me more about the Rubenfeld Synergy Method. I would love to tell you how you can experience a session with me or one of my many well trained colleagues throughout the U.S., Canada and some European countries. This is an experience like no other. Your body will know what it is like to be unencumbered, relaxed and aligned. Your mind will know what it is like to be at peace.

This was a journey you took us on that we all can appreciate. You have shown me the importance of learning and then taking action not just for myself yet for everyone.
I believe in this type of method to bring closeness into our relationships. You can only imagine the positive change it will have on each of us. I am one that owes it to myself to venture more in this with detail.
Your always bringing real usable approaches in our lives. Thank you very much Dr. Erica your truly a Godsend.

William,
I don’t always talk about this beautiful, gentle and powerful work because I am so focused on the overall understanding of what is love, what enhances the love within relationships and how to heal through love. This gentle style of touching and listening enables clients to recall a time when they felt whole and complete and loved – and in that process they feel more valued, appreciated and able to love again in their lives.
Warmly,
Dr. Erica

Dr. Erica, yes bringing one back to the last time they felt of value is so important. Just as facing the truth of self-worth.
We just want to feel needed and loved. That is the hungry in each of us and if one needs others to make them aware, that is great. Most people are to busy wishing they had what is seen on TV or others relationships. If you can manifest that feeling from them. The start to see a newer them. They begin to have faith in their own abilities and can start the healing process.
Dr. Erica your always supportive and a great powerful presents in our industry. Thank you for providing a needed service with such passion and care.

Erica,
Thank you for sharing our wonderful experience in Ashland. As a fellow Rubenfeld Synergist, who travelled from Edmonton, AB, Canada the conference for me was a confirmation of how powerful the Rubenfeld Synergy Method is for helping people feel more confortable in their own skin! As a present client shared with me, “This method really works. Friends keep asking me where am I getting the joy juice?”

Joan,
It was a truly wonderful and renewing experience for me. Since I spend a lot of time talking with clients, I sometimes momentarily forget how powerful a simple touch can be. The gentle, respectful and empathic listening touch and the non-judgemental acceptance offered by Rubenfeld Synergists provides a safe environment for lasting change to be set into action.
Warmly,
Dr. Erica

It was wonderful for me to be reconnected with this community of caring professionals, sharing a type of work that could literally heal the world if enough people received sessions.

Beautiful, Erica. Rubenfeld Synergy is truly healing work and I love how you have made clear the power of listening touch. How magical to have experienced the solar eclipse there in Ashland as well as the joy of being with your teacher and fellow Synergists.

So nice to hear your supportive words. I missed you at the conference. You held the space for the International Association of Rubenfeld Synergists from its inception and for so many of the growing years as founding President. My goal is to share this beautiful work with many more people.

Dear Erica, Thank you for describing so fully the nature of our work, the Conference, Ilana Rubenfeld and our fellowship with Ilana. Humbling and inspiring. As a finale, the eclipse seemed to me to beckon us to simplify and integrate our lives so that we can resonate with our own highest purpose and with others.

Bonnie,
Yes. The eclipse occurring right at the conclusion of such a heartwarming and personally renewing conference was a reminder to let go of what no longer serves us and really begin to resonate with our higher purpose.

Erica

Hi Dr. Erica,
Sounds like you had quite the time plus being able to spend some time with your teacher and mentor.
This is my first visit to your blog so I was very fascinated to read more about what you’re involved in and what the conference entailed. I find that all so very interesting.
To top the entire trip off, you got to witness the solar eclipse. Now that’s a trip worth remembering.
Blessings,
~Adrienne

Hi Erica,
Thanks for sharing this story. It reminds me of my past!
I have never heard of the Rubenfield method before. It sounds an absolutely wonderful way to heal body and soul.
When I was staying in New York some 25 years ago, I had the pleasure to meet Don McFarlend of Body Harmony. A couple of his practitioners worked on me in a demo and my feet realigned to the point that I had to get new shoes. This was a problem that I believe limited my athletic ability as a child.
I experienced incredible things during healing sessions including Shiatsu, Postural Integration, Rolfing, and many individual methods. All of these have contributed to my transformation.
I would recommend Dr Erica to anyone reading this post. I have no affiliation with her and earn no money from this. I just know the power of healing, and how releasing stored up emotion can add years to your life.

John,
Thank you for your affirmative support. I have also received (and also studied) many different body therapy and body oriented psychotherapy sessions over the years, including shiatsu, polarity, craniosacral, Trager, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, bioenergetic Analysis, Rolfing, Neuromuscular massage, Kinesiology and so many more. I can’t imagine what it would have been like to have never learned the power of the bodymind connection.

Hello Erica,
Having studied psychology in High School and College, I am familiar with Gestalt Therapy, but have never heard of The Rubenfeld Synergy Method and do find it intriguing. I will have to Google it, since I am big on research, or if you could provide more information about it. Is it anything like Zen Body Therapy?
Thank you and I hope to hear from you for some details.

Kim,
Since I am the marketing committee chair for the International Association of Rubenfeld Synergists, we have created a blog at http://www.RubenfeldSynergy.com/blog. This method is different from most other types of body therapy, energy work or body psychotherapy. The client does not just lie there and receive but is an integral part of the treatment and process.
Using gentle touch, holding and sometimes very small movements, the practitioner assists the client to let go of specific tension places in the body. It is not just feeling the energy. It does not involve massaging muscles. Through the gentle, guiding touch the client’s body becomes acutely responsive and long-held memories and suppressed emotions often emerge. That is the opportunity for the Synergist and client to dialogue about the issue that has emerged, often from the past, but always related to current life situations.
Since the client is fully involved, once an issue is unearthed and dealt with, the changes in the body and in the person’s life are often powerful and long lasting.
I don’t know much about Zen body therapy, but I imagine that it is gentle body therapy to help a client let go and perhaps become aware of body sensations. Where the Rubenfeld Synergy Method excels is in the thoroughly trained, empathic and non-intrusive guidance and responsiveness used by the Synergist to whatever issues arise during the session.
Warmly,
Dr. Erica

Lynn,
Oregon is so beautiful, especially from the airplane when you see how green and lush it is. Glad to have visited your state. Ashland is a special town. It felt as if I was back in the 1960′s. It has a sense of ease and friendliness and is filled with musicians and artists, yogis, academics.

Wow, what a training and a trainer and weekend and experience. As a psychology major I recognized those famous names in psychology that your teacher and mentor knew. And that she combined it all is so amazing. I could use a weekend up there!
Thanks for sharing this part of your life with us.
