Your Mind Controls Your Body
Do you currently suffer from different body ailments that you believe just happened to you? Are you assuming you have a genetic predetermination or are just a helpless victim of life circumstances?
Many of us believe, especially if we are building our own businesses and studying from positive thinking mentors, that we can have control over our minds. Many of us believe that if we focus our mind on a goal, on our dream, then we can create the vision that is in our mind.
Howver, most of us do not apply that same knowledge and wisdom to the actions and ailments in our own body. Too close to home? Too real for comfort? Whatever it is, our body responds to our thoughts and beliefs, habits, patterns, memories and previous injuries and responses.
Do you believe your body is separate from your mind and that illness and dis-ease just happen to you? I am excited to share with you in this blog post a demonstration of the gentle and powerful Rubenfeld Synergy Method, the work I have practiced, along with traditional counseling, for over 2 decades, shown here so elegantly by my mentor and teacher, Ilana Rubenfeld.

Hi Erica,
I am fascinated by the mind-body connection. I had never heard about the Rubenfeld Synergy Method and it looks fantastic.
I have used Emotional Freedom Technique and the Rubenfeld process reminded me of EFT.
My practice focuses on using art to strengthen the conscious mind-body connection.
Thanks for introducing me to another fabulous mind-body tool. I too, believe that most of the challenges we face are due to the disconnect between our minds and our bodies.

I believe our minds can help us to heal our body. However, we receive so much input from others and can be so easily affected, not only by our own but by others’ thoughts and words.

Hi Erica,
it is so good to see you drawing the attention to healing of the body in regards to ‘mind over matter’.
Undoing old conditioning is very helpful regardless of what method is used for healing. I have learned and used many methods
over the last 30 years. I like the gentle, energy aligning method.
Great to know you have the ability to help people with the Rubenfeld method. It sounds very interesting.

Hey Erica,
Awesome posting and thanks for brining attention to the matter.
More times than not, people invent and create their own problems. I see this almost every day as people develop a chronic excuse pattern to why they life isn’t going well for them.
Well, I’m sorry to say to those who don’t know or who don’t want to take responsibility… but your actions are based upon your thought process and cause by reasons of your own.
Thanks for helping to spell this out, people need to understand this!

Dr. Erica, thanks for writing on this topic! I am fully aware of the mind body connect, however, I wasn’t always was and am still nto a master of it’s control. I first discovered this strong connection when I was a miserable engineer, hating my job and I started to get sick all the time (and I never get sick!). I also developed migraines that after a year of tests and 2 different neurologists, we finally discovered they were caused by stress. After I quit engineering these issues disappeared! I now notice very physical symptoms appear when I’m stressed. It is incredible and often for me the big indicator that I’m not on the right track and need to make changes!

I fully believe in the mind body connection and the power we have to hear illness within ourselves and to rid our body of toxins. While I believe this I readily admit I don’t put into practice the theory as often as I would like. So many times “time” gets in the way of taking care of ourselves. Thank you for this powerful reminder.

My daughter is a kinesionics practitioner, and would understand HOW and WHY this works. I’m just thankful to know that it does, and that there are so many different techniques available… some of them easy enough for a child to learn to do.

Hi Dr Erica,
There is no doubt that our minds control our bodies.
Some years ago, I attended a workshop where one of the processes was a Rolfer reading our bodies and telling us what our thoughts were about ourselves. He was uncanningly accurate!
If we can tell our mindset by looking at our bodies, our mind must control the body! Even after all these years, I sometimes don’t want to be reminded of my thoughts! The interesting thing about all this is that bodywork can improve mental clarity. Everything is connected. We are mind, body, spirit and will, and when all these are aligned we are whole.

There are so many tell signs that will allow a person to read someone without them being questioned. This is a skill that the more your practice. The more you can master. Years, and years of involvement is required.

I also came from a sports background as a Professor of Health and Physical Education. I saw the mind/body connection in terms of skills performed. For example, in tennis, when someone is tight and doesn’t believe they can do it they tend to push at the ball instead of swinging. In gymnatics, if they believe they “can’t” do a skill, even a simple forward roll, then they can’t!

Hello Dr. Goodstone,
Long time no see… Too long!
When my second wife battled with cancer, I saw first hand how the mind can control the body. Each time she walked into her oncologists office for a visit, I always could see the amazement in their eyes that she was still alive. When she was first diagnosed, she was already stage 4. I remember doctors telling us to make preparations within the following 2 or 3 months and she outlived their predictions by 10 years.

From what I understand, there is always an issue much deeper than the ailment that needs to be dealt with. I think that most if not all diseases come from our mental views. Awesome post!

Kyle,
It’s great that you understand this. So many people do not want to take responsibility for their body or their life. It is so much easier, in the short run, to either rely on someone else (a doctor) or blame someone else (the one you supposedly love). But in the long run, life is so much more satisfying when we pay attention to our own needs, the messages our body reveals to us, and our lifestyle.

Ilana Rubenfeld obviously knows what she is doing and is a master of her art. If I went to someone offering a similar service, how would I know that they were so competent? I think that I have come across some who, frankly, did not know what they were doing.
Controlling our own bodies with our own mind is a different subject. Whilst I totally believe that it is possible, I would not risk any life threatening situation such as cancer. I still think that the medical profession has a role here.

What is special about the Rubenfeld Synergy training is that it is a 3 year program (for awhile it was 4 years). During that time there is a tremendous amount of supervision. We worked in triads, in groups, had to receive many private sessions to work out our own personal issues, and once someone becomes a Certified Rubenfeld Synergist, they have really done a lot of work.
I have also received many body therapy sessions in which the practitioner was not skilled in dealing with emotions and was quite hurtful to me. Luckily I had already had a lot of good sessions and lots of training to deal with that.

Hi Dr Erica, for years I went to a practitioner who did “network spinal analysis” on me. This is a form of chiropractic care, where they retrain the nervous system, so it “forgets” previous traumas or injuries. It really helped me to heal leg injuries I believed I still had after 30 years. It’s challenging to do that kind of healing by yourself, and it seems the work you’re referring to is also helping people in this manner?

Julieanne,
I have also experienced many Network Chiropractic sessions. Yes, it can release some traumas or memories held in the nervous system but there is no dialogue about the personal meaning in your own life. What is special about the Rubenfeld Synergy Method is that you not only release tensions patterns but your brain has a chance to process the changes and dialogue about it while you are in that relaxed state – and again afterwards – speaking directly to the practitioner and sometimes to other people in the group (when there is a group session). I work a lot with couples, with both present in the room and one partner receiving the session and the other partner either helping or observing – and interacting. the intimacy can be incredible.

Great post, Dr. Erica! I personally think it is a little more complicated than that. I certainly don’t think that people can’t walk or see because it’s all in their head. However, I think that our mind’s reaction to stimulus can make things better or worse. When I was reading Happy for No Reason, it told the story of a woman who lost her vision because of an accident with her contact lenses. She never got her vision back, but she had a better handle on the situation than a lot of people would if something like that happened to them.

Hi Erica, this is interesting because I’ve long believed that your thoughts, the way you handle stress, all these things are directly related to various illnesses and problems in your body. I used to share my thoughts on that and people would say “oh yeah, so you are saying it’s all in my mind huh?” – in other words they thought I was saying they weren’t hurting really, just faking it. These days, more and more people are understanding the connection.

The work that I do includes a type of mind-body awareness called the Rubenfeld Synergy Method. When I help my clients to relax and become aware of the tension patterns in their body, not to mention their shallow breathing, as their body lets down, they become so much more clear about the issues in their life. We often hold our body in a certain way as if to guard us against feeling our emotions.

The mind and body ARE very intimately connected; and I always find it fascinating to see that whatever goes on in the mind will always show up in the body. It is so powerful that not only can we observe and learn from what is going on in our body; but, we can also heal ourselves through the mind-body connection.
Wishing you greatness in your practice… and using this method I can see how your work can have very powerful results.

That is why the Rubenfeld Synergy Method can be so powerful By helping the body to let go of its habitual tension patterns (through gentle guiding touch therapy), those parts that are holding on because of emotional turmoil will seem to scream out. And then you can focus on what the possible life meaning is – and let the physical symptom abate.
